Oldies but Goodies

I've been thinking about this blog for a while now.  I'll start by telling you that I love movies.  All movies.  I watch anything.  My biggest pet peeve about movies are remakes.  There are so many of them!  Most times the original movie is much better than the remake.  Three movies that proove some remakes should never have been made: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Peter Pan, and the Bad News Bears.

Let's look at this in a little more detail.  I love the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  The music is very well written, the characters were cast perfectly, and there's a timeless appeal to the movie.  Now, I love Johny Depp...I don't know too many women who don't.  But the remake of that movie was just weird.  They made Willy Wonka a crazy, cruel, and eccentric person.  The original Willy Wonka character loved his candy shop and was a little eccentric, but not dark.  Tim Burton worries me.

Peter Pan.  This is a toss up for me.  Each remake has it's own take on Peter Pan, but I like the 1950's version and Hook.

The remake of Bad News Bears is just that, bad.  The original with Tatum O'Neal and Walter Matthau was great.  Walter played a great drunk.  There's very few people who can capture that type of drunk vulgarity.

On the contrary, there's several remakes I love.  These include Flubber, A Little Princess, and The Secret Garden, The Parent Trap.  These movies are all great and I think they at least as good, if not better than the originals.  The music, plot, and actors or actresses make them special in their own way.

I had to make a hard decision today. Christmas Eve is tomorrow, but we are expecting bad weather. My family gathers for Christmas on Christmas Eve several hours from where I live. I had to make a judgement call to not go. I'm rather sad about not going, because I love being able to spend time with everyone. Also, I have a new born cousin I'd like to meet.

This brings me to the topic of family. I've been a part of several different family get togethers over the years and no two are exactly the same. My family is very interesting in itself.  Our holidays are call "food festivals."  This is adequately named, because that's really what they are.  The actual holiday doesn't matter - only the food.  Thanksgiving is particularly bad.  For 4 days we all get together and do nothing but eat.  It's amazing we're not all 500 lbs or more.

What makes holidays in our family really special is not just the food (even though the food is Cordon Bleu outstanding), but the conversations.  Have you seen Wedding Crashers?  You know that outspoken/racist old grandma?  Well, we have characters who are equally amusing.  The characters who play roles in our holidays include: the outspoken Uncle who has more life experience and opinions than almost all other family members put together, the quiet nun-like aunt and grandmother who have never sworn a day in their lives (they are sisters after all), the comedian father (he's like a robin williams in training), the semi-racist grandparents (they remind me of the parents on Everyone Loves Raymond's), and the rest of the pawns are all there for comic relief.

What's my role?  I'm just a pawn.  I help the comedic father in his never ending quest to get the rest of the family to spit food and drinks across the table due to an unexpected bout of comedy.  Although, I'm usually the one spitting food.  Of course, the food is followed by games of backgammon, dominos, and cards, and more food.  Bet you didn't guess that.

The best part of the family get togethers is that it doesn't matter if anyone spit-up at a meal.  Nor does it matter if someone did.  It just mattered that we spent it together.  I secretly think we eat so much food, because food makes people happy and happy people complain less.  My family hates complainers.

I enjoy spending time with all of our family as often as possible. You never know how long people will live and how much time you have left to enjoy their presence. Treasure every moment. I do.

A normal dream...this rarely happens to me

Since this is my first real post. I think I will try to break you in slowly to my humor, life, and thoughts.

While in the shower this morning, I was thinking about my dream last night. I do this quite often in the shower. There's really not much else for me to think about that early in the morning. I am an early riser out of necessity, not choice. If it were up to me, I would stay up until 11/12 at night and wake in the morning around 9. Unfortunately, life gets in the way of what I want and I do what I need to have a life.

Anyhow, my dream was about all of my co-workers and friends thinking I stink. Literally. Now some of you out there might think this is a rather strange dream, but it isn't for me. This is a fairly straight forward and normal dream for me. I am constantly concerned about smelling. You can't always smell your own bo and I am always a little consciencious and slightly worried that I might smell and not know. I will occassionally ask my husband if I smell, unfortunately he can't smell very well. Well, maybe that is fortunate for me. LOL.

My other thoughts this morning revolved around the fact that I think in blog and facebook status speak. I'm sure that makes me slightly odd, but I'm ok with it. I usually narrate what I'm doing and think of little quips to use later in my journal, facebook status, and now my blog.

Introductions

I will start this blog in the same manner as I start my journals - with introductions. I am the young housewife. I live in a moderate sized town in the midwest. I live with my husband and two dogs in our house. I decided to create this blog to publish some of my own thoughts about life and everything that comes with it. I will try not to bore you, but I make no promises.  I can be quite boring at times, but please bear with me.

I have many likes and dislikes, which you will discover through my posts. When I really like something, I tend to get a little obsessed, which you will also find through the posts. I'm warning you now that I will make a lot of references to current movies (Twilight series), books (Twilight series), and current events (release of New Moon and Eclipse). See what I'm talking about? I'm just kidding, I do like - no love - the Twilight series, but I will not be that obnoxious about it. I hope.

You might be wondering why I'm calling myself the young housewife? First, I am not a housewife. I live in a house and am a wife, therefore I consider myself a housewife. I do have a full time - 50 hours a week - job outside the house. Second, I will always consider myself young. At least until I'm the oldest living person (I personally doubt that will happen but I like a challenge).

So, that's a little about myself.  I don't think I'm a great writer, but I hope I keep you interested.  I have lots of opinions...who doesn't?  Please feel free to post coments.  I will respond.  I like a good debate of opinions.
